Nowadays it’s fairly easy to find buy a tea plant to keep at home.
But I hadn’t heard of a tea plant bonsai until recently.
Bonsai (盆栽) is the art of replicating a miniature version of a full grown tree in nature.
I’m not a bonsai practitioner, but I’ve been reading about it just for fun.
The tea tree bonsai is not the tea plant
There’s a plant called the oriental tea tree, or fukien tea tree (Ehretia mycrophylla).
It is a popular plant for a bonsai, but it shouldn’t be confused with the tea plant (Camellia sinensis).
Also, there are plants from the same Camellia genus used in bonsai, such as the Camellia japonica (Japanese camellia) which aren’t the tea plant either.
As a tea enthusiast, I’m interested in tea plant bonsai.
