How to Make Matcha Iri Genmaicha

How to make matcha iri genmaichaMatcha iri genmaicha (抹茶入玄米茶) is a blend of two very popular Japanese teas: matcha and genmaicha.

If you ever feel like drinking a bolder version of a genmaicha, this might be what you need.

But it’s not always available in tea stores, so I’ll tell you how to make it at home.

Matcha iri genmaicha recipe

You just need to have a normal genmaicha and some matcha.

The ratio of genmaicha to matcha is 100 : 3. That is, if you have 100 grams of genmaicha, you should add 3 grams (3%) of matcha.

Of course, you can add more or less if you want. I think that as much as 100 : 5 would still work.

I started with 50 grams of genmaicha. Hence, I used 1.5 grams of matcha.

The better the matcha and the genmaicha, the better the result. But since it was my first time, I just used a cooking grade matcha that was reasonably green.

But if you have a bigger quantity of tea, you can shake it in a bag or the like.

It looked nice and green when it was done.

I infused some to see if I had prepared it correctly.

I used 4 grams of tea, and 120 ml (4 oz) of boiling water for 30 seconds. The same as for a normal genmaicha.

The body and umami of the matcha complemented the nutty flavor of the toasted rice.

Although the tea was a success, next time I want to use a higher quality matcha.

I hope I have enough genmaicha to try this. I know I have lots of matcha.

      Hi Georgia

If you have at least 33 grams of genmaicha, you can add a gram of matcha and it would work 🙂
